Power-over-Ethernet Switches

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) delivers data packets and DC power over the same copper cable making the deployment of VoIP phones, Wi-Fi access points, security cameras and other systems much simpler. The PoE standard calls for both power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered devices (PDs) to create a complete system. PoE switches are the leading type of PSE and are considered end-span PSE to differentiate them from mid-span PoE devices that sit between a non-PoE switch and the PD in retrofit applications. PoE switches must meet either the IEEE 802.3af standard (supplying 15.4 Watts in order to deliver 12.95 Watts to the end device) or the IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard (supplying 30 Watts in order to deliver 25.50 Watts to the end device).

In addition to supporting PoE standards, PoE switches must be evaluated for their data features. Some key criteria include SNMP management, port count, Ethernet speed support (10/100/1000 Mbps) and copper or fiber network ports. Some PoE switches also operate at either Layer 2 (MAC Layer) or Layer 3 (IP Layer) or higher.
